i wonder if you can talk about biden's role in the administration. what it says that he was tapped for the role about his status in administration. this was a moment when we say wow, this has been one of the more consequential vice presidents? >> biden has been influential in a way that was not appreciated. chuck hagel seems to be on his way to being secretary of defense. they are very close and i don't know that obama had a deep relationship with him, but there other ways in which his fingerprints are on the president's policies and afghanistan won the argument. two things here i would add on guns specifically. biden in a way is -- a messenger for obama and sectors that may not trust him. he's got working class roots from industrial pennsylvania. he's catholic. i guess that the white house sees him as a messenger to people who might be skeptical and have ideas of what obama's agenda is and that biden could be a better messenger on this. i hate to bring up the 2016 number, but i think you may see more opportunities for biden to step out and prove him

we start this hour talking about a major announcement from president obama and the vice president, joe biden. next hour they will unveil their plan to fight gun violence in america. and they'll be joined by several families of newtown shooting victims and children who wrote letters about gun violence. here's what we're experting. according to an official familiar with the situation the president will press for a ban on high capacity magazines and assault weapons, push for universal background checks and request funds be made available to treat mental illness and enhance school safety. dan lothian joins us now. the nra is on the attack before they have seen the plan. >> it's a controversial ad the nra has released. it's not only going after the president and suggesting he's an elitist, but also going after the first daughters. it is an ad that is clearly aimed at sort of defending their position, which is they believe as the president looks to have these two tracks, one put pressure on congress to pass some of this -- these regulations, but also for the president to do things on his own

but with the vice president and certainly president obama with their strength of the office and going around the country and talking to americans which basically agree with the president, it's going to be up to the people across the country to talk to their members of congress to make sure that we and get this done. this can save lives. we've saw that. when the large magazine clips, which i've been reintroducing ever since 204, when that ban was in place, we did not see these magazines out on the streets. and they were very expensive because they were rare. we can do that again to cut that down. we're not going to be taking away anyone's right to own a gun. the supreme court already did that. but with the president laying out what he did, in a very holistic way, by the way, by working with our schools, making sure we have community policing, have psychologists. it's going to be up to the schools to make the decision on what they want, but we should be there to help them. ifwe can't protect our children from school or someone going to the movies, i think that has hit the heart of every
